About the project
Reduced in size Nordica also known as the Ironbark Home in Wingham was built as high-performance secondary dwelling that demonstrates what is possible within a compact footprint.
The design is a considered fusion of two Scandi Cabin models — combining a flipped Borealis floor plan with the Nordica form. This approach allowed the home to respond precisely to the site, positioning large windows to the northern end to maximise natural light throughout the day.
Orientated to the beautiful Ironbark tree and carefully placed between the side boundary and the existing garage, the building makes efficient use of the available space while maintaining strong proportions and presence. The result is a home that feels significantly larger than its footprint, with soaring ceilings of over 4 metres enhancing the sense of openness.
With the existing double garage providing ample storage, the internal layout is freed from bulky cabinetry and dedicated entirely to living — creating a clean, uncluttered environment that prioritises comfort and usability.
Built using prefabricated mass timber elements, the structure was delivered and assembled efficiently, reducing build time while maintaining a high level of quality. The Ironbark Home in Wingham demonstrates how high-performance secondary dwellings can be delivered quickly within existing suburbs.
Layout and interior
The layout centres around an open-plan living, kitchen, and dining area, designed to capture light and connect seamlessly with the outdoors.
Full-height glazing to the north brings sunlight deep into the space, shifting throughout the day and reinforcing the home’s bright, airy character. Combined with cathedral ceilings rising above 4 metres, the interior feels expansive, calm, and well-balanced.
The interior is finished with whitewashed mass timber walls, creating a warm, natural, and refined atmosphere. This finish highlights the texture of the timber while keeping the space light and contemporary — adding a sense of understated, natural luxury.
The kitchen is designed in a functional L-shape layout, offering generous bench space while maintaining a clean, unobtrusive presence within the living area.
A well-proportioned bedroom with a built-in wardrobe is positioned for privacy and comfort, providing practical storage without taking away from the openness of the living areas.
A separate study room provides flexibility for a home office or quiet retreat — an important feature for modern living.
Polished concrete flooring was selected for its durability, low maintenance, and thermal performance. Acting as thermal mass, it absorbs the northern sun during winter and helps regulate indoor temperatures naturally.
The bathroom is finished with a terrazzo stone look tiles, and complemented by an LED oval mirror for a clean, modern finish.
With storage located externally in the garage, the interior remains focused on living rather than storage. This allows for a more generous sense of space, avoiding the feeling of compromise often associated with smaller homes.
