At the heart of the home is an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, enhanced by raked ceilings and exposed timber beams that create a strong sense of space. Large double-glazed windows and glazed doors draw in natural light and connect the interior to the outdoors, making the compact footprint feel open and inviting, while helping keep the heat out in summer and warmth in during winter.

The kitchen is positioned efficiently along the wall, with clean-lined cabinetry, integrated appliances, and a generous window that brings in both light and outlook. Its layout allows for easy flow between cooking, dining, and living zones without interrupting the openness of the space.

The two-bedroom configuration offers flexibility for a range of uses, while maintaining separation from the main living area. In the bedroom, built-in mirrored wardrobes enhance both functionality and the perception of space, reflecting light and views from the surrounding windows.

The bathroom continues the Scandinavian design approach, combining natural timber with soft, neutral tiles and simple black fixtures. The result is a calm, cohesive space that feels warm yet minimal.

Throughout the cabin, the use of natural timber, light colour tones, and consistent detailing creates a unified interior that is both practical and visually balanced.

Owner-Builder Build Timeline and Videos

The project was undertaken by a first-time owner-builder, with Scandi components installed in just 5 days on a prepared foundation. Site works began on 16 September, including excavation and pier preparation. The build then progressed part-time — around three days a week — with the help of a builder mate on the tools and local tradespeople, reaching completion in approximately 12 weeks.

The internal fit-out includes the kitchen, finishes, and final details, with landscaping and driveway works completed shortly after, bringing the cabin to a ready-to-occupy state.

Follow the Borealis as it takes shape on site — from the early stages through to the structural build and walkthrough. These videos highlight how efficiently the Scandi system comes together, with structure completed in just a few days.

Day 1 – Scandi walls, doors and windows

On the first day, the team unpacked the pallets, and built the walls, doors, and windows up to the gables.

Day 2 – Scandi Gables and Rafters Preparation

It was a slower half-day on site with the owner-builder, her husband and their mate helping out. The team finished the walls, installed the gables, and checked the steel rods in preparation for the rafters.

Day 3 – Scandi Roof Framing, Decking, and Walkthrough

On Day 3, progress picked up again. Using a manual Material Hoist hired from Kennards, the team installed the 90 kg rafters, fitted the window and door handles, completed the decking, and met with the plumber and roofer to plan the next stages. With the beams in place, the structure is now locked, tied down, and fully sound.

This wraps up our Borealis timelapse updates as the owner-builder continues the project independently.
