Modern Backyard Living Space in Armidale

This modern light-filled living space in Armidale showcases how a compact footprint can still feel open, modern, and incredibly inviting.

Originally based on our 30 m² Sprucescape design, this version was custom enlarged to approximately 45 m² and redesigned without an internal wall dividing the living area and bedroom, creating one continuous open-plan space with a light and airy feel throughout.

Additional windows were also incorporated into the design, bringing in even more natural light and strengthening the connection to the outdoors. Combined with the raked ceiling and open-plan layout, the extra glazing completely transforms the feel of the interior, making the space feel significantly larger than its footprint suggests.

Project manager Martin Chaseling, an owner of well knowed local company Green Door, said the openness of the design became one of the standout features during the fit-out stage:

“Once the white interiors, flooring, and kitchen started coming together, the whole space completely opened up. It feels light, calm, and much bigger than people expect when they first see the footprint.”

The white-painted timber walls and ceilings create a soft Scandinavian-inspired atmosphere while still allowing the natural timber grain texture to subtly show through the paint finish. Warm timber-look flooring and darker kitchen cabinetry add contrast and balance to the bright interior palette.

“By increasing the size, opening up the layout, and adding more glazing, we created a space that feels much larger than its footprint. The amount of natural light throughout the day is remarkable.” – said Martin.

Externally, the project features generous glazing, beautifully finished decking, and clean architectural detailing around the windows, doors, and architraves, giving the cabin a refined modern appearance.

Designed as an additional living space for family or guests, this customised Sprucescape demonstrates how flexible the Scandi system can be — allowing layouts, sizes, and window configurations to be adapted to suit different ways of living while maintaining the warmth, efficiency, and simplicity of Scandinavian-inspired design.
