Smaller backyard cabins typically take between 1-3 days to build to lockup stage on a prepared foundation. Granny flats take 3-6 days to install the prefab parts. For example, the 10m² Foss cabin takes about 1 day, while the largest Forestmist granny flat takes around 6 days. Additional time is required for internal fit-outs and fittings.
Frequently asked questions
General questions
No, Scandi Cabins are designed to be built on-site in 1-6 days, avoiding costly road transport and cranes, while allowing you to oversee and control the building process directly.
No, access is not a problem. You can fit prefab components through the door.
Yes, Scandi Cabins are covered by warranties for supplied materials and work carried out by the builder, as required by Australian Laws. The laws slightly differ form state to state, so for full details on coverage, please contact your local builder.
Scandi Cabins are crafted in Europe from Nordic Spruce grown in FSC-certified forests. The timber is kiln-dried, milled, and flat-packed before being shipped to Australia and New Zealand.
Delivery and installation
An 8-meter, 6-tonne truck with a Hiab crane will deliver your prefab cabin. Ensure there’s enough space in your backyard or near the kerbside for unloading. Ideally, the pallets are placed close to the site for convenient unpacking.
Your cabin needs a flat, solid, and level base. Options include a concrete slab, timber stumps, decking, pavers, or breeze blocks. The base must have 90-degree angles at all corners.
You’ll need basic tools such as an 8-meter measuring tape, electric screwdriver, drill, mallet, spirit level, hammer, and a handsaw. Optional tools like a nail gun can speed up the process, especially for roofing.
All Scandi Cabins come with detailed assembly instructions. If you’re having trouble, feel free to reach out to the builder you purchased the cabin from for guidance.
Finance Options
Some of our builders offer financing options. Please contact your nearest builder to discuss available options.
Council permits
Most backyard cabins don’t require council approval, as they are typically used for non-habitable purposes or as an extra room to your main house.
If you’re building a non-habitable space such as a pool cabana or a shed, generally you do not require planning permission. If you’re building a home office, teenage retreat, or guest room, you can use a private certifier or surveyor to obtain a permit without needing to go through council.
Visit the “Do I Need Council Approval to Build a Cabin?” page to see if your project meets state-wide requirements.
In some states like NSW, QLD and VIC there is a fast-track approval process for granny flats that can be built without council approval. In other states, the process is less clear and is managed by local councils rather than being state-wide.
Choose your state on ‘Do I need council approval’ page to explore some standard guidelines to determine if you might be able to construct a granny flat without requiring council approval.
